The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians is a Native American community located on highway 17-A between the towns of Moncks Corner and Summerville near Carnes Crossroads. Community members can trace their bloodlines to multiple Native American lineages including: Etiwan, Edisto, Catawba, Cherokee, and other Settlement Indians. This community resides in Berkeley County, which at one time stretched from St. James, Goose Creek Parish to St. John’s Parish. We have been known by different names, the most common are Varnertown Indians and Summerville Indians. Currently, we have over 1500 documented bloodline descendants with over 200 years of history.
